This microcourse introduces ABBYY FineReader Engine, its core OCR capabilities, common usage scenarios, deployment basics, licensing concepts, and key developer resources.
You will explore how FineReader Engine functions as an OCR SDK for document recognition and processing, how it supports workflows such as document conversion, data capture, archiving, and scalable processing, and how tools such as the Code Samples Library, Help Files, and License Manager support development and deployment.
Microcourse duration: 2 hours*
Access duration: 365 days
Please note that this is an introductory microcourse and part of the larger ABBYY FineReader Engine learning plan: Getting Started with FineReader Engine.
The learning plan will be marked as complete, and a certificate will be automatically issued once all microcourses and the final survey have been completed.
*It's important to recognize that the time needed to complete this microcourse will vary among students. This is due to differences in educational backgrounds, learning styles, and personal motivations for taking ABBYY University courses. As a result, we can only provide a general estimate of the completion time.
Training Environment
To complete the training successfully and smoothly, students should use the required training environment.
This course requires two training environments:
- Windows—for the majority of practical tasks
- Linux—for deploying FineReader Engine on Linux and in Docker containers
Students may choose one of the following options:
- Use the downloadable, preconfigured Virtual Machines for Windows and Linux.
- Install the FineReader Engine distribution kits on their own machines.
Important: Students must use the exact Windows and Linux builds provided for this course. Different FineReader Engine builds may include different core technologies, parameters, predefined profiles, or required components. They may also produce different results.
For the best training experience, only the builds provided in the course should be used. If a student chooses to deploy a different version of FineReader Engine, the ABBYY Support team will not assist with issues that arise during the practical training tasks.
If students choose to work in their own Windows environment, Visual Studio 2022 or later must be installed. ABBYY does not provide support for Visual Studio deployment. For Microsoft’s official deployment documentation, refer to:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/deployment
The downloadable VMs already include the required FineReader Engine distribution kits and all necessary resources for the training, including Visual Studio. However, using the downloadable VMs may require additional setup effort, including downloading large VM files, allocating sufficient system resources, and configuring the virtual environment before the training.
